Hi all i got this email yesterday from Zoe from Adventure sports and it really makes me think that road user dont really think about us bicycle users its quite a shame!
“Subject: cycling on swazi roads
To all cyclists out there
On Saturday morning, a bunch of cyclists left Manzini to cycle to Mbabane and back, not even half an hour into their ride, just before the Caltex garage leaving Manzini, before the Nhlangano off ramp, Bradley Young was hit by a car. Apparently the driver had dozed off and he was to take the Nhlangano off ramp. Bradley was thrown over the barrier and suffered a broken thigh, right leg. The driver had no drivers licence, he did stop and steps were taken to make sure he did not leave the scene. An ambulance was called and Bradley was ferried to the Mbabane Clinic and then from there to Nelspruit. So far so good, he is in a stable condition.
The police were called and a statement was made. But what actually happens to a driver without a licence, does he just pay a E60 fine? As cyclists we have to make sure that something is done about this, the media, the cycling association and all cyclists need to come together to make other road users aware of the growing no of cyclists that are using the public roads.
Lets organise a mass ride, where all cyclists come together and we show the motorists how many cyclists there are and that we need to be noticed on the road.
All cyclists must make sure that they are visible on the roads, a rear flashing light, bright clothing, a safety bib, and they must please obey the rules of the road.
Your feedback will be much appreciated.
Kind regards
